Who We Are

Compeer volunteers are adults across the age and gender spectrum from all walks of life who know how important friendship and social connection are to everyone's well being.

Volunteers are matched with adults who are living with mental illness and are referred to the program by their mental health care provider. The volunteer and matched friend are supported in creating an intentional friendship with the goal of reducing isolation and loneliness.

Compeer Johnson County is a local affiliate of Compeer International and uses their established matching process and program model which is recognized as a best practice for mental health recovery by the American Psychological Association.

What We Do

The Compeer Program matches adults who are living with mental illness with community volunteers to create intentional friendships with the goal of reducing isolation and loneliness.

Compeer friends are asked to connect with their match 1x a week for 1 hour, for a year. Volunteers are asked to take the initiative to reach out to their match to make plans. Together, you decide what you’d like to do and when you can get together each week.

Volunteers receive training, ongoing education and support from Compeer staff and are rewarded by the knowledge that they are making a positive difference in someone’s life.
