Peace Corps is an independent government agency doing development work in over 70 countries worldwide. All majors are needed. Volunteers work in agriculture, environment, education, health, youth, and community economic development. Peace Corps Volunteers serve for 27 month assignments. Health insurance, transportation and a living stipend is provided. Also, volunteers accrue money in an account for a total of $8,000 for 27 months, which is given to the volunteer at the end of service as a "re-adjustment" allowance. As a Peace Corps Volunteer, you help translate host country development plans into community level action, thus improving the lives of local people. You arrive, not with funds or equipment, but with skills and knowledge as well as the willingness to adapt them to your community. Before starting your two-year assignment, you receive up to three months of training, focusing on language, cross-cultural, and technical skills. The training occurs in the country where you will be serving.
