Who We Are
Friendship Community Project is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit, founded in 2015, dedicated to teaching English language and life skills to Iowa City area adult immigrants and refugees. We strive to impart English language skills necessary for success and to promote a sense of community belonging and practical assistance in accessing local resources and learning about our community and to serve as an anchor for those new to the community and culture who have not yet formed local ties. Extra curricular activities include a help desk, conversation groups, tutoring, and conversation partners.
What We Do
We have an ongoing need for volunteer instructors with a background in TESOL, English, languages, linguistics and/or education to teach our free, adult English as a second language classes for immigrants and refugees. Instructors should be able to commit to teaching 10am-11:30am Mondays and Wednesdays from Sept-Dec and January to May. Location: 845 Pepperwood Lane. Classes typically have under 10 students post-pandemic, and masking in the classroom is usual.
Volunteers may also help as classroom assistants, tutors, conversation group leaders, or conversation partners.
