Volunteer: Transportation (or marketing, fundraising, communication, construction, legal expertise)

Travel to rendezvous locations to pick up a raptor (eagles, hawks, owls, vultures, etc) in distress and transport it to our clinic.  This may require capturing and handling the raptor.  Training and safety equipment will be provided.  

No prior experience necessary. Requires a valid driver's license. Requires a good driving record. Requires a vehicle that can accommodate two foot tall box. Must be at least 18 years old.  Minors must have a parent/guardian present at all times and may not have direct contact with animals. Must wear closed-toed shoes if handling live raptors. Minimum commitment of one pick up or four hours per month.

Volunteer: Education

Attend community events in a variety of locations (both indoors and outdoors) to educate children and adults about Iowa's raptors (eagles, hawks, owls, vultures, etc) and their role in ecosystems, as well as about RARE as an organization and the services we provide to southeastern Iowa.  This may include answering questions, displaying or preserving educational specimens and materials, presenting programs in front of groups of up to 100 participants (average of 30 people).  Training and safety equipment will be provided.  The address listed below is only one location where educational events are held.

No prior experience necessary. Must be at least 18 years old.  Minors must have a parent/guardian present at all times and may not have direct contact with animals. Must be comfortable handling preserved educational specimens: wings, feet, skulls, bones, feathers, etc of deceased birds, and pellets (regurgitated clumps of undigested food like fur and bones). Must be comfortable interacting with children and explaining things in ways they can understand. Minimum commitment of 1 event or 4 hrs per month.    Must wear closed-toed shoes if handling live raptors.

Volunteer: Raptor Care & Rehabilitation

Assist in the rehabilitative care of sick and/or injured raptors (eagles, hawks, owls, vultures, etc). This requires handling raptors, assisting with treatment, preparing food, cleaning, caring for our avian ambassadors, and more. Training and safety equipment will be provided. 

No prior experience necessary. Must be at least 18 years old.  Minors must have a parent/guardian present at all times and may not have direct contact with animals. Must be comfortable working in direct contact with live birds of prey. Must be comfortable preparing thawed mice, rats, quail, etc. Must be aware that euthanasia is a component of any wildlife rehabilitation in the USA and required by state and federal laws in certain circumstances.  There aren't any "no-kill" wildlife rehabilitators; that applies to domestic animals only. Minimum commitment of 1 shift or 4 hrs per month.  Shifts vary between 1-4 hrs depending on the number of animals and the number of volunteers. Must wear closed-toe shoes.   We have 2 facilities: the one listed below in Iowa City (indoor), and 2257 Sugar Bottom Rd. NE, Solon 52333 (outdoor)
