Volunteer: Community Inclusion Club Peer MentorsCommunity Inclusion Club (CIC) is a non-profit that was created to provide/ facilitate socially inclusive opportunities for adults with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) living in and around the Iowa City community. We do this by hosting events once a month at various locations where people with and without ID meet, mingle and get to know one another. Ideally, this will result in people forming friendships, and in turn those friends will meet and communicate with one another outside of our scheduled event times. We realize that people with ID often lack opportunities to interact with their non-disabled peers in the community, and this club was founded to change all that. If you are interested in being a part of CIC, please go to our website (see below)and register. https://communityinclusionclub.com/#mission We do background checks on all members, and once you have been vetted you will be added to our mailing list. Please consider joining our group; it is truly life changing and I guarantee wyou will have a great time! Volunteer: Share your America - Host an exchange student!international Experience (iE), with US Department of State support, is planning to welcome exchange students to the US for the 2020-21 school year. We continue to monitor recommendations from the CDC, WHO and Department of State, and will adjust our program as necessary, always acting with student and host family health in mind. Reaching out for more info or even registering on our website does NOT obligate you to host if your family should reconsider later this summer. So now that all of my disclaimers are out of the way... let's jump in to what we're looking for! A volunteer host family fills the place of a parent during a student's exchange year/semester abroad. We're looking for families/adults/empty nesters/single adults/parents with toddlers/parents with teens (there are LOTS of types of families!) who will provide a safe & caring home environment, basic room & board (3 meals/day and a permanent bed - can share a room with a host sibling of the same gender within 3 years of age), and reasonable transportation (to & from team practices, rides to the mall, pick-ups from a friend's house, etc). We have a vetting process for host families to ensure the safety of all - including an online application (www.ie-usa.org), a criminal background check (for any family member 18+ living at home full time) and in-home interview. We also call references as provided in the application. Students go through a similar vetting process, and also need teacher's recommendations and a English proficiency exam. iE requires a minimum English language score in order to gain admittance into the program. Students come with a willingness and openness to learn - about a new culture, a new high school, a new family, a new city/state - and also to share about their country and way of life. Host families can gain a relationship that can truly last a lifetime. We have several Local Coordinators in your area who would love to help you with this experience! Reach out today for more information or just to have a conversation about what hosting could look like for your family. Call/text Regional Director Judy at 920-241-3878 or email j.hintz@international-experience.net. If hosting isn't right for you but you know someone who would make a PERFECT host family, make a referral on our website and earn $200! https://www.ie-usa.org/make-a-referral/host-family-referral-200/

Volunteer: COVID Code Red ResponderAmerica’s blood centers need donors #NowMoreThanEver. The COVID-19 pandemic is devastating our blood supply: blood drives have been canceled and donors are afraid to visit centers. The American Red Cross has recommended hospitals reduce blood product utilization by 25%. This is a deadly shortage that affects millions, including anemic, transplant, cancer, surgery, sickle cell, trauma, and pregnant patients. There is no alternative for blood. In response, we have launched our COVID Code Red campaign to support blood centers and the healthcare system. The goal of this campaign is to start a social movement to bring greater awareness and rally young people nationwide to advocate for their local centers. UBI leadership would provide support to those volunteers or Code Red Responders. Responders have the opportunity to make a substantial impact on the health of their community and give back during this hard time.

Volunteer: Grill Cook
Are you a breakfast chef (or think you could be)? This volunteer position entails cooking bacon & sausage, scrambling eggs, and flipping french toast in large quantities, to order. This job doesn't involve anything super gourmet, but does involve a little stamina and a good attitude, as we can be pretty fast paced on occasion! On the job training is available, so experience in a kitchen would be nice, but not required.
The grill cook position, once trained, would be 6-9am, every other Wednesday. This position would ideally run the whole school year, so keep that in mind if you are interested. This is truly the beating heart of the café, and we are looking for more capable individuals who can do it! This would be a great job for someone that is high energy, enthusiastic, or loves cooking.

Volunteer: Real Climate Action Campaign VolunteerMighty Earth is seeking motivated community members to work on an exciting campaign to protect Midwest landscapes and promote a more sustainable future. For years, politicians, BigAg lobbyists, and even environmentalists have promoted biofuels as a sustainable energy source. Unfortunately, research has shown that biofuels are not a greener energy option. In fact, they are adding to greenhouse gas emissions in our atmosphere, destroying wildlife habitats, and polluting our drinking water. With the next presidential campaign rapidly approaching, Iowa -- as the first state to vote for presidential nominees -- has the opportunity to shape the narrative toward a greener future for the entire Midwest by moving away from biofuels and instead promoting real climate solutions, such as wind energy, solar power, and land conservation.
