Crowded Closet Thrift Shop

The Crowded Closet mission is to share God’s love and compassion in the name of Christ by supporting Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) world relief, service and development programs, as well as local community relief agencies. All the profits of the Crowded Closet go to support these relief and service organizations. 

​The thrift shop sells donated goods such as clothing for men, women and children, housewares, furniture, toys, books and antiques. In addition, we offer Fair Trade food items such as coffee and chocolate as well as seasonal items such as decor, gifts and more.

Crowded Closet supports disaster relief, sustainable community development and justice and peace-building work both locally and globally through the work of Mennonite Central Committee (www.mcc.org). Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is highly rated by the American Institute of Philanthropy, a nonprofit charity watchdog organization. Crowded Closet has been a local business in Iowa City since 1978. Contributing to our local community through partnerships with The Crisis Center of Johnson County, Domestic Violence Intervention Program as well as the Shelter House. Crowded Closet is more than a thrift shop. We work with programs such as Systems Unlimited, Transitions program, and ReEmployability to provide jobs and job training. We help give discarded items a new life by reselling and recycling them. Crowded Closet is committed to create opportunities for the community to join in volunteer service. Our volunteers are invested in the organization and its goals. When asked why people should volunteer at Crowded Closet one volunteer said, "It is a wonderful community to be part of and serves a huge need in the community on so many levels."
